In October 2009, eight aspiring authors faced off in the First Annual Paranormal Authors Fight Club over at Romance in the Backseat. I was one of those eight authors.
Download an updated and (slightly) expanded ebook of "A Wild Hunt" for free at Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo, Diesel, Sony, or Goodreads. The ebook includes the first chapter of my novel Scent and Shadow, which also takes place in Madison, WI.
We were all given the same prompt and told to write the first thousand words of a story. Winners of each round would move one to the next, writing two 1500 word installments and a final 2000 word conculsion.
Though I was eliminated early on, I committed myself to finishing the story and keeping it freely available for folks to read. The initial installment was posted at the Fight Club website, and the subsequent five installments were posted over at my blog.
What was supposed to be a 6000 word short story ended up being a roughly 10,000 word novelette.
Following the contest rules (and unlike most of my published writing) this story is appropriate for a PG-13 audience.
The story is broken out into pages along installment lines, so the first story page is part one, the second is part two, etc.
And without further ado, here is the prompt we were given. Enjoy!
"She hurried her footsteps down the alley. This was not part of the plan. Something grabbed her foot. A bottle, a branch, or a hand -- either way she found herself flat on the pavement, cheek to the ground, face to foot with a very large, very black, boot."
